I am a certified Reading Specialist in my sixth year of teaching.  I believe that all children can become successful, life-long readers and learners.  This year, I am working with struggling readers and writers in order to help them develop reading skills and utilize reading strategies.  In addition to reading, I enjoy listening to many types of music, collecting records and CDs, as well as playing music myself.  I am a life-long Cubs fan, and I plan on passing this curse onto my first son, Griff (born June 21, 2007).  I have taught Reading and Language Arts in Glen Ellyn and Aurora.  This is my third year as a Plank Pirate, and I love it.  This is truly a special place.

Students in my classes are expected to participate each day in group activities, keep a Reading Record of their independent reading, and maintain a personal vocabulary bank.  My focus is on improving reading comprehension through a number of strategies, including vocabulary development, literary components, word attack strategies and previewing text, as well as metacognitive strategies like connecting, predicting, questioning, visualizing, summarizing and synthesizing.  Most assignments will be completed in class though there is occasional homework for practice.  Please be sure to check your child`s assignment notebook each evening in order to insure that they are completing all of their assignments.
